NORTELS Golf Society - 2009-10 AGM & Spring Cup

Dear readers,
I apologise for the delay in getting this report onto the Blog - my excuse is that there are just too many end-of year things happening that took priority over this...

Anyway... Nortels met for the SPRING Cup and 2009-2010 Annual General Meeting at The Shire on 30th March 2010. We had a really good turn out with 21 people turning up to play this course including seven guests.

It promised to be a fantastic day on what we hoped would be a superb course. The weather in the morning looked promising but a little cooler than of late. And we were in for a treat with coffee and bacon roles to start the day off nicely.....

However the omens were against us... the first indication was from those hapless ones travelling on the M25 as a major hold up caused lengthy delays and plans to reschedule the pre-arranged groups were being forged and re-adjusted as people arrived.
Then the weather conditions on the day deteriorated - we had the four seasons in less than three hours that day. It began to turn for the worse soon after the last group teed-off. At times there were gale force winds, rain sleet and snow falling almost horizontally, it was so bad that about 20% of the people playing decided not to finish and walked off the course early. The course was waterlogged in many places with lots of surface water too which made playing the course a drudge rather than a delight. The score cards were saturated and some were in tatters (no people did not tear them up because of the poor golf) they just fell to bits. It looked as if the best score had been posted by a couple of those that got off early, only to find that the best score came in from Dave T who was in the penultimate group.

Returning to the club house was a welcome relief as everyone was saturated and cold, the hot and powerful showers soon brought feeling back to chilled extremities. If that didn't do the trick then the curry that followed was both tasty and spicy enough to give us all a warm glow.

The General Manager of the course apologised afterwards for the poor conditions and claimed that they had 10 inches of water in the previous 24 hours and promised us a special deal to compensate for our disappointment.

And so to the Results:

AGM
The following are the key issues addressed in the AGM:
  • Approval of changes to the constitution
  • Chairman's thanks to the committee and & review of the 2009/10 year
  • Balance sheet approved - membership fees to remain at £25
  • Handicap list issues & Player of the year
  • The existing committee willing to stand were re-elected.
  • New Captain (Dickie Smart) voted in (see his address below)
  • Election of Auditors: Mark Graham M, Chris, Phil & Steve R.
  • Agreed next year's venues - including to proceed with a suitable November venue.
  • Singles & Doubles Competitions
  • AOB
Dickie advised the meeting that his charities will be the Nightingale Community Hospice and We are MacMillan (Cancer Support). And that he proposed in addition to the normal Captain's day that we should hold an "eclectic" competition throughout the year based upon Stableford points. The charge would be £2 per event entry or £10 for the year paid before the competition starts.

Next event: Toot Hill - Beever Trophy 21 April 2010
