Nortel's Pairs K/O competition Final

Laurie Ockleford & Phil Osgood challenged Nigel Shadbolt and Alban Macdonald in this year the Nortel's Pairs final knock out competition. Nigel being the lowest handicap of 7, gave 5 shots to Alban, 9 shots to Laurie and 11 shots to Phil. This meant that it would be especially hard for Nigel to win any of the holes where shots were given.

It proved to be was a very close-cut match with the player of the year competition result riding on it too. The first attempt at settling this match took place on Tuesday 15th September. We met at 3:00pm and the weather was expected to rain with lacking visibility. It was a dismal day and resulted in a draw on the 17th green of Lamerwood Golf Course and an agreement by both sides to abandon through lack of visibility.

The match was played again on Friday 9th October at the Gog Magog (Wendlebury) course. In contrast to the dismal weather at Lamerwood, the weather at Gog Magog was exceptional for the time of year. We were treated to some beautiful autumnal scenes and it was just a joy to play that day. It's a shame we have no photos to display. The match proved to be a very close run game yet again, with both sides taking the lead at some stage only for the lead to be cancelled out.

The match was resolved on the 17th Green with a victory for Nigel and Alban. Both teams played really well with the lead being taking or won back through Birdies and Pars in the main.

Both sides played some really excellent golf. But most notable was Phil Osgood second shot onto the green from over 170 yards that left his ball within a few feet of the pin from the 11th Fairway. This delivered a cutting "gross birdie" and won the hole.

The trophies for this will be awarded at the Christmas Frolic.
